Savoury 'buttermilk' biscuits

Well known savoury bites in America, these are delicious little scone like biscuits that are perfect for dipping in soups and stews. For a variation add some chopped fresh herbs to the dough before rolling.


175g self-raising flour , plus a little for dusting
1 tbsp xylitol or sugar
¼ tsp bicarbonate of soda
Pinch of sea salt
60g vegan spread
100ml Oat Dream
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp Oat Dream for brushing biscuits


  1. Heat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6.
  2. Place the flour, sugar, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a food processor.
  3. Add the vegan spread and whizz in the food processor until fine crumbs form.
  4. Place the Oat Dream in a jug and add the lemon juice.
  5. Allow to sit for 5 minutes.
  6. With the machine running gradually add the Oat Dream until you form a soft dough.
  7. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured surface, then knead once or twice to bring the mixture together.
  8. Gently roll out the dough until it is about 1cm thick.
  9. Cut our rounds about 4cm in diameter.
  10. Place the biscuits on a greased and lined baking sheet, arranging them about 5cm apart. Brush over the tops with Oat Dream.
  11. Bake in the oven for 10-12 mins until risen and golden brown.
  12. Leave to cool a little before serving.
